You can help keep us doing what we do best, help us to please the kids of the community!
SWAPA is an independent registered charity that has been working in one of the more deprived areas of Hackney for more than 40 years. We are an open access, staffed, playground for 6-15 year olds, all children attending on their own are registered and children under 6 attend with an appropriate adult.
Our aim is to provide a FREE quality play provision all year round, developing community links and bringing natural world into a rich and varied play environment. We provide stimulating, self-directed learning opportunities for children of all abilities within and environment that empowers and respects them and their needs, via a range of indoor and outdoor activities - from cooking, climbing, swinging, den building, arts and crafts and lots more.
Are staff are qualified Playworkers, Forest School Practitioners and Youth Workers. With current DBS checks and First aid certificates.
We support The United Nations General Comment 17 on Article 31 of The Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) Childs Right To Play.
Each year SWAPA is visited at least 10,500 times by children who have limited options available to them. And each year we struggle to secure the funding we need to keep open and free to use.
SWAPA is run by a small group of voluntary trustees who work in partnership with the playwork team. Fundraising is always high on our agenda as although L.B Hackney is our main funder due to cuts over the last couple of years we are trying to access further funding and are always looking for different streams of funding, whether it be big or small.
Would are looking to secure core costs for ground rent, utility bills, staff training & salaries, etc. We are always looking for funding childrens projects: The playworkers work in conjuction and consultation with the children on projects from their wish list when fundraising – planning with pictures and diagrams, asking them to consider who would benefit. The children like to make contributions too by cooking cakes and making arts and crafts to sell on our community open days.
The present wish list includes
New equipment for outside space – permanent play structures such as slides/swings/ climbing walls
Residental Trips and outdoor experiences
New equipment for inside space– sensory toys, mats, ball pit, kitchen supplies
New equipment for the music container -mikes,mixing boards, sound, computers
We always want, new play sand, bark, timber and donations
All our trips are risk assessed with permission slips sent out to parents and carers – we take photos (with permission) of the day and the children and parents complete surveys so insuring we get the best possible outcomes .
For most children attending SWAPA is their only outside space to play in safety, please help make a wish come true.
We would be grateful if you are an individual or if an orgnanisation, the Trustees could consider making a contribution towards our work.
We would be very pleased to provide you with further information and invite you to visit SWAPA at any time, if you haven't visited already.
